Hanoi GRDP growth could go up to 8% in 2021

In addition to better harness the effective containment of the Covid-19 pandemic, Hanoi aims to accelerate the economic restructuring process for a strong economic rebound this year.

Given favorable conditions, Hanoi’s gross regional domestic product (GRDP) growth could go up to 8% in 2021.

Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Hai Minh Hai revealed the rate in one of the three growth scenarios at a meeting discussing measures to support the city’s socio-economic development in 2021 on January 15.

For a baseline scenario, Hanoi is set to attain an economic growth of 7.5%, while a less optimistic one shows the growth rate at 7%.

To ensure a high growth rate of 7.5-8% for this year, Hanoi has set up nine groups of priorities, including a focus on addressing social issues that are causing public discontent; effective containing the Covid-19 pandemic; boosting economic recovery and accelerating the economic restructuring process.

Mr. Ha expected Hanoi to better mobilize and utilize resources for development, while restructuring the city’s expenditure to channel more capital into development.

”The city will continue to enhance the quality of the workforce via innovation and greater application of science and technology,” he noted.

Hanoi will also focus on administrative reform and stepping up the fight against corruption and waste, stressed Mr. Ha.

Ensuring happy and safe Tet holiday

Ahead of the upcoming Tet holiday, Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Chu Xuan Dung said the city is putting in place plans to ensure a safe and happy festive period for the locals.

So far, the city has been cooperating with retailers to stockpile basic necessities, including rice, vegetable, meat, and seafood worth VND39.4 trillion (US$1.7 billion), up 5% against the 2020 Tet.

According to Mr. Dung, Hanoi is working with other provinces/cities to supply nearly 50,000 tons of goods and products worth VND600 billion (US$26 million), meeting demand of the locals during the Tet.

Public order and safety for the community continue to be the priority for local authorities, said Mr. Dung.
