Prime Minister orders the completion of Gia Binh Airport-Hanoi route in 2 years

Building the airport and its infrastructure will help spur socioeconomic growth in the North.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on February 23 asked relevant government agencies to complete construction of a road linking Gia Binh Airport in the northern province of Bac Ninh to Hanoi within two years.

Construction must be fast, direct and efficient, he said, stressing the importance of the route at a meeting on the progress of Gia Binh Airport’s progress in Bac Ninh Province.

The route will be 50 kilometers long and 120 meters wide. It will run through Hanoi for 28 kilometers, including 8 kilometers of new construction, the section coinciding with the Hanoi-Thai Nguyen Expressway and Ring Road No. 3, and the 20.54-kilometer Tu Lien Bridge Road.

Speaking about the airport project, the Prime Minister said that it is crucial for projecting the country's image to the world, attracting investment and promoting tourism.

According to PM Chinh, Hanoi and the Red River Delta are the main growth drivers for northern Vietnam, hence the need for another airport in addition to Noi Bai International Airport, where despite the construction of a new terminal, it is expected to become congested at the current growth rate, he said.

He urged ministries, agencies and local authorities to start planning Phase 2 while still working on Phase 1, which began in mid-December 2024, to save time, effort and resources.

At the groundbreaking ceremony for the first phase of Gia Binh Airport in mid-December 2024, PM Chinh instructed authorities to plan the connecting road to Hanoi.

He urged related parties to work out a plan to start construction of the road by the end of June 2025.

Gia Binh Airport will cover an area of 125 hectares and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025. After Phase 1, it will serve as a Level 3 helicopter airport, a Level 3 military airport, and a 3C civil airport according to ICAO standards.

In 2021-2030, Gia Binh Airport will reach ICAO 4E standards. It will handle one million passengers and 250,000 tons of cargo per year. By 2050, its capacity will increase to three million passengers and one million tons of cargo per year.

A 3.2-hectare dedicated VIP terminal for official government flights will be located south of the dedicated aircraft parking area.
