Denmark cooperates with Vietnam towards low-carbon development
A project, sponsored by the Danish Government, will further promote the efficiency of energy activities in Vietnam.
The Vietnam-Denmark Energy Partnership Program in the period 2020-2025 (DEPP3 Program) will make great contributions to the implementation of Vietnam's greenhouse gas emission reduction targets under the Paris Agreement on climate change.
The information was released at the first meeting of the DEPP3 Program's Steering Committee, which was jointly held by the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) and the Danish Embassy in Vietnam on April 19.

The program, managed by the MoIT's Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Development Department, is financed by the Scandinavian country’s non-refundable ODA amount of 60.29 million Danish Krone (US$8.96 million). It is aimed at supporting Vietnam in building a low-carbon development roadmap for the energy industry.
The program will continue to pursue the common goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in accordance with Vietnam’s commitment to “Nationally Determined Contribution” but with higher ambitions and goals.
Kim Højlund Christensen, Danish Ambassador to Vietnam highly appreciated the cooperation with the MoIT in the energy sector through the DEPP3 Program.
Despite difficulties due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the program has achieved many positive results such as organizing an experience-sharing workshop and proposing grid connection regulations for energy storage systems, and completing the calculation of the energy system model.
“These are all important inputs for important decisions in Vietnam,” Kim Højlund Christensen emphasized.
At the meeting, Nadeem Niwaz, the Country Manager of DEPP at the Danish Energy Agency, delivered a report on the implementation of the components of the DEPP3 Program in 2021, accordingly, the relevant parties have actively coordinated and accelerated the progress of the program despite impacts from the Covid-19 pandemic.
Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Dang Hoang An affirmed technical assistance programs and projects funded by the Danish Government in recent years have contributed to promoting the sustainable development of Vietnam's energy industry towards increasing exploitation and development of clean and renewable energy sources, fostering economical and efficient use of energy.
Delegates at the event also discussed the outcomes of the action plans in 2021 and the plan for 2022 which was approved by the program’s Steering Committee.

On the occasion of the DEPP3 Steering Committee meeting, the MoIT awarded the Medal “For the development of Vietnam’s industry and trade” to the Ambassador of Denmark in Vietnam Kim Hjlund Christensen for his contributions to promoting cooperation relationship between the two countries, especially in the fields of industry and trade in recent years.
Danish Ambassador Kim Højlund Christensen's term will end in July this year.
The program consists of three components: Component 1: Capacity building on the long-term planning of the energy sector, chaired by the Department of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Ministry of Industry and Trade. The objective of the Component is to improve capacity in energy sector planning and policy formulation and to integrate renewable energy sources, including offshore wind power development and energy-saving technologies, which are economically effective solutions to fulfill NDC commitments while ensuring national energy security.
Component 2: Improving the capacity to integrate renewable energy into the power system which is chaired by the Electricity Regulatory Authority of Vietnam, Ministry of Industry and Trade. The objective of the Component is to develop and complete a legal framework and flexible solutions for power system operation to support a safe and efficient transition towards the use of clean energy with an increased proportion of renewable energy sources.
Component 3: Low-carbon development in the industry is chaired by the Department of Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Development, Ministry of Industry and Trade. The objective of the Component is to develop incentive mechanisms for the implementation of energy efficiency in the industrial sector, improve capacity building and amend the legal framework on energy efficiency use at the national level and effectively enforce the legislation at the provincial level. |
