Hanoi, Fukuoka advance "One Health" initiative for sustainable development

The Hanoi Times -- A meeting between Hanoi and Fukuoka officials marked a significant milestone in their 15-year partnership, with a renewed focus on the groundbreaking "One Health" program. This initiative, central to their 2024-2028 cooperation agreement, aims to create a holistic approach to public health by integrating human, animal, and environmental well-being.

At the meeting held in Hanoi on March 3, Deputy Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Nguyen Manh Quyen and Fukuoka Assembly Chairman Kohara Katsuji emphasized the program’s role in building a sustainable living environment. The "One Health" framework will prioritize disease prevention, healthcare innovation, and environmental sustainability, addressing challenges such as zoonotic diseases and climate impacts.
Deputy Chairman Quyen said Hanoi has taken proactive steps, including issuing digital health records for citizens and working toward universal annual health check-ups. He proposed a detailed five-year action plan to implement "One Health" with measurable goals and annual evaluations. Fukuoka, known for its forward-thinking health and environmental policies, will share its expertise in urban planning, waste management, and public health infrastructure.

Beyond healthcare, further cooperation covers education, culture, and investment. Japan remains Hanoi's top economic partner with over US$14 billion in FDI and $2.9 billion in ODA, funding critical infrastructure such as transportation and water systems. These projects align with the goals of "One Health" which focuses on promoting resilient cities and healthier communities.
Experts say that by bridging local governance and cross-sectoral expertise, Hanoi and Fukuoka are setting a global example of how regional partnerships can drive sustainable growth. Their commitment to "One Health" helps enhance the quality of life and deepens the strategic relationship between Vietnam and Japan, proving that collaboration is the key to tackling the 21st century challenges.
