Haiphong’s proposal for new int'l airport approved
The project is expected to help Haiphong City to realize its target of becoming one of the most developed cities in Asia.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has just approved a proposal from the northern coastal city of Haiphong’s authorities on building a new international airport in Tien Lang District, which would be its second following Cat Bi, in order to serve the northern port city's socio-economic development.
The project is expected to help Hai Phong to realize its target of becoming one of the most developed cities in Asia.
Besides, the Prime Minister has agreed with the city's proposal to adjust the general planning for the current Cat Bi International Airport. Accordingly, the airport would have an expected capacity of handling 13 million passengers per year by 2030 and the figure will increase to 27.6 million by 2045.
The city also built plans to develop road and urban railway lines to connect with Tien Lang Airport.
Hai Phong, around 100 kilometers from Hanoi, is home to a key port for both domestic and international trade. The city is currently also a manufacturing hub for numerous multinational companies, including LG, VinFast, and Bridgestone as well as an important maritime hub thanks to heavy investment in a modern seaport system.
Under the plan for airport system development submitted by the transport ministry in November 2021, Vietnam would have 28 airports by 2030 with a total capacity of 278 million passengers per year.
Six new airports would be built by 2030 in the provinces of Lai Chau, Lao Cai, Son La, Quang Tri, Binh Thuan and Dong Nai, according to the plan. Another domestic airport in the northern mountainous province of Cao Bang would be built by 2050.
